When we decide to open a blog, we hardly have our ideal reader in mind. Don't say otherwise, because I don't believe it. I opened Penna blu because I wanted to talk about writing, after having frequented the web for years and having read texts written in indecent ways. One of the good blogging practices , which should be done before opening a blog, is to understand which reader to write to . The exact opposite of what politicians do in their electoral campaigns: that is, trying to collect as many votes as possible. But a blogger cannot and must not gather as many readers as possible, but only his own readers. Every blog has its audience, which is not born at the birth of the blog, but is defined along the way. In a certain sense we can say that blogs and audiences define each other as we move forward over time.
What does “know your audience” mean? Skimming the web, basically. There are millions of users and not all of them, obviously, are interested in our topics. A certain skimming, a sorting, is done as soon as we choose the topic to be covered in the blog, but do we have to do further skimming in that same topic? I don't know, I don't know the Special Data answer to this question. I didn't do it, just as I don't think other bloggers have done it. So who am I turning to? Who writes Blue Pen for? For whom but writing For those who want to get better at writing For those who have a blog For those who want to improve the management of a blog For those who love reading For those who want to publish a book For those who want to promote a book This is my audience, but it was born slowly, it was born after several months of publishing posts on the blog. 3 types of articles to write When I talked about the original content to be created on the blog , a comment said: A topic may be new to one audience and overused to another.
This situation is normal in almost all blogs, in my opinion. If a scientist opens a blog on quantum physics, to expose his theories and studies, well, there is little need to write overused articles, the audience is well defined there. If a social media manager opens a blog to talk about how to use and manage social profiles, who is he really addressing? To companies and professionals, who will be its potential customers, but also to private individuals who want to obtain results from social media. Ergo: it is aimed at a large segment of the public. This is why, in my opinion, three types of articles are created in most blogs . Posts for everyone : they are potentially written for everyone. But “everyone” is a word not to be taken literally. My posts in favor of reading are written for anyone who can read in Italian, but they are certainly not appreciated by goats. Post for beginners : my article comparing journalism and blogging is for those who are just approaching blogging, certainly not for an expert reader, who perhaps manages blogs for clients.
